Writing

A journal of and about my writing

Yesterday, and this morning, were rough. I was distracted with the news, and lots of things needing done around the house. I came home after work and got a lot done, then sat down to re-work the combat scene I was stuck on. I'm happy with what I got down, and now excited to get to the next bit of the story.

I'm having a difficult time wording this battle scene so it makes sense. I'll probably give it another once over tomorrow.

I only had a short time to write, but it was nice to do it first thing in the morning. I'm hoping I can start getting up early enough to make that a regular thing.

I went back to the map I drew, added in some things, and figured out what to do. I like where things went here. Went back through and added in a few small changes.

Kinda stuck again. Not sure what to do about travel. I don't want to simply skip ahead.

957 words today.

I got a little stuck today. I spent a few hours letting it simmer, and finally managed to going again. I've found that playing some ambient stuff on Youtube helps.

It's been pretty helpful for locking out the world and just being in my head with the story.

That's about all.

I made a lot of small revisions, and added some details. I also started drawing a map of the world.

Went back through and started sprinkling little tidbits of backstory in my dialog. I have quite a bit of backstory for the world written up in my lexicon, and a whole lot of details about other things going on in the world while my main character is doing her thing.

I usually start by making a lexicon, and it's just that, a file named “lexicon.txt”. This is where I jot down notes and ideas about my story. Usually a paragraph with the basic idea, and then as I go I add names of characters and little tidbits of information about them, for me to refer back to later on.

My main character was just the name, with a description of “main character”. I have a major supporting character that I also started writing up notes on, and then kept writing more notes. I had a lot of ideas for this character, and didn't intend for the main character to meet this character right away.

I started writing, and got about fifteen pages in before I realized that I was writing mostly about this supporting character. More and more ideas about her backstory, and where she lived, kept coming, and I'd written almost nothing about the main character. It became obvious that the main character is not the main character, this supporting character is the main character. So I backed up to the beginning, and started over again.

Once again, I got a few pages in, and then I realized I was starting in the wrong place. It was the middle of the story, or maybe a little more toward the end, and there was a lot of backstory to cover. So, I started over again.

I wrote 1,832 words today.
